I, too, feel sad when I watch Serenity, not least because of what happens to both Book and Wash (especially poor old Wash).
I really felt for Zoe, especially towards the end when she was saying "She's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true." You know damn well it's herself she's talking about, as much as the old boat.
I thought David Krumholtz (whom I know as maths genius "Charlie Epps" in the TV series Numb3rs) was brilliant as Mr Universe, except when he turned them all in and then got stabbed. Idiot.
Where the blue flying Hells have I seen Chwietel Ejiofor (the Operative) before? And why can't I pronounce his name properly?
Oh, and at long last, Kaylee got her Simon. That pleased me. Now let's hope we get to see a sequel to Serenity where Inara and Mal can put their egos to one side and do what they so clearly want to do with each other. :)
Did you notice, though, that there was an underlying theme to the story, namely that of what love is capable of?
Simon threw his career away to rescue River out of love. The operative killed out of love for the Alliance. Mal risked his life, and that of his ship, to come to Inara's aid out of love for her. River faced off against all those Reavers, and beat the tar out of them, out of love for Simon.
Right at the end, Mal's speech about love reflected the Operative's comment about love at the beginning.
As a movie, it was well crafted. You could tell that so much love had gone into the thing. The acknowledgement at the end of the credits thanking the cast and crew of the TV series "Firefly" showed that the movie was as much for them as it was for the fans.
But hell yeah, Book looked amazing. Ironic, isn't it, that the actor who played a Christian preacher is himself a Buddhist? :)
