As I said, this is a post I printed originally as a response to a post by [livejournal.com profile] lyny_wolf. Only this post has added spellchecking.

The response's title was "Dreams of Civilisation Collapsing or Collapsed."

I had a really bad dream, once. I wrote it down. There were a bunch of people stranded in a shopping mall, all of whom were from various minorities - Armenians, Poles, gays, black women and children, Irish people, A number of people from the Middle East - Jews, Muslims and Indians / Pakistanis, all thrown in together, desperate.

And I knew what they were running from. A slowly advancing marching column of uniformed Aryan fascists coming down the main thoroughfare like a column of soldier ants.

It was my job to lead all these people out the back door, unnoticed, before the jackboot column arrived. Even as I was herding everybody out to safety, I could hear the damned jackboots getting closer and closer, marching in lockstep.

There've been plenty of dreams like that. Britain as a fallen nation, now run along the lines of a nepotistic Banana Republic: or watching helplessly from the shoreline as a distant city gets nuked, watching as the sky turns a fiery red and a glowing yellow mushroom cloud rises in the distance.

Once, I was dreaming of driving a horse and buggy, would you believe, through cornfields out between the towns. All around were hills and mountains, and these were shielding me from the nukes that were dropping all around. Every few minutes, a new mushroom cloud would rise up on the horizon, and another city had gone.

And then one of them dropped right in front of us on the road ... and failed to detonate. Just sat there, with its nose cone half buried in the soft dirt of the track. Gave us enough time to get what felt like thirty, forty miles away before it went off: a detonation that brought buildings down all around us, but that somehow left the one nearest us almost intact, protecting us from the immediate blast.

Yet other times, I've had dreams where it's tornadoes, or a hole in space leading to some unknown dimension - and the government's rounding up all us dissidents and sending us through it as a "drafted exploratory force."

And one time, I dreamed that the Shadows from Babylon 5 just ... materialised in the airspace over the town. Right overhead, all black and menacing.

You get used to having scary dreams like these. Back in the day, Pharaohs would sit up and take notice if you held forth with dreams like these.
