That's one of the two completely different kinds of dulcimer :-)
That's a hammered dulcimer ... the other kind is the Appalachian Dulcimer, which is the kind that an American would be more likely to know ...

There's also a
bowed dulcimer
which is sort of like the Appalachian dulcimer, but played more like a cello.
