Lovely Shiny People ...

... and in case you're wondering, I'm referring to the growing band of fans of Serenity and Firefly I'm finding all over the place. The future of Serenity may still look grim, but new fans are popping up each day, all of them asking me with bright eyes "Have you seen Firefly yet? / Have you seen Serenity yet?" There are more of us each day - and when did "you" become "us" here?

It's the brightness of the eyes, when it's all so new and wonderful; when belonging to a small knot of People In The Know matters. It makes you feel special to know that you have been a witness to something majestic and rare, like a butterfly of an unknown species landing on the bridge of your nose.

Shiny.

Buried with Honours

I thought it interesting that Mr Universe got buried together with Shepherd Book and Wash. Mr Universe's dalliance with the crew of Serenity was all too brief, but nonetheless there he is, honoured by being laid to rest alongside her fallen crew.

Another thought. River's talent could stem from two sources: her own innate talents, and also her long term exposure to the minds of other skilled people. No wonder she knew how to fly the ship, after all those long voyages in the company of Wash, absorbing his experience by osmosis. She could very likely also be perfectly capable of performing the tasks of a ship's doctor, a Captain ... even a Companion.

There was a bit of disconcert about that here and there in the group, however, from what I've come to understand, he has more of a role in the comics that came out over the summer prior to the movie officially premiering (which is apparently also where some of the possibly Zoe!Pregnant hints are). I need to get the comics at some point. But apparently Mr. Universe plays a much bigger role that was explained elsewhere (comics).

And definitely with River. I mean, that one is kind of obvious. Not to mention that there's no telling what else she was "programmed" with during all those years with the Hands of Blue people. I'm sure she'll be quite interesting.

Of course, my favorite reference to her throughout the whole movie was the albatross reference. I was so proud as an English major and Romantic that there was a Coleridge reference AND that Mal understood it.
