Catchphrases
Aug. 3rd, 2012 07:35 pmI like catchphrases.
Well, some catchphrases. Sparingly, judiciously used. Never overworked, because they would not only tire the ear; they would make me appear weak, unoriginal, cliched. And I do not like that. At all.
I mourn the loss of two of my favourite catchphrases, "That which does not kill us makes us stranger," and "I am an agent of Chaos," purloined by The Joker in the 2008 Chris Nolan Batman movie.
Well, when I say that, I still on occasion use those sayings. Just because Mr J stole them (and being an arch criminal, you think he'd be the sort to have asked permission first?) doesn't make them true, or less valid for me.
I do, however, still use a number of other catchphrases - including ones borrowed from a bunch of other, more obscure sources.
"I like playing with Dark and Sinister Forces. What else are Dark and Sinister Forces for BUT to play with?" - the latter half attributed to Deadlock, The ABC Warriors
"You're not losing your mind. You're becoming as sane as I am." - The Joker, Deadlock, probably Freakazoid and the Animaniacs for all I know
"I am Chaos. I am alive. And I tell you that you are free." - Eris, from Principia Discordia
I also liberally quote from the entire body of Phil Brucato's Code of Ananda as adhered to by his much-loved, and long-missed, Cult of Ecstasy. It's a code of being cool that amounts to "Be free, but leave everyone around you the right to be free themselves. Karma's a bitch. Laugh. Enjoy your passions - even fear - but don't let them master you. You are the master of your Ecstasy, not the other way around."
Others I quote come from the new World of Darkness roleplaying game- "Power attracts Darkness; Darkness attracts Power," being one; and the other being:-
"If you do not serve yourself,
Then surely you shall be made to serve another;
If you do not master yourself,
Then someone will certainly master you."
I fill my life with these little catchphrases and sayings. They are my corpus of little aphorisms; they help me get through the day with a smile on my face.
And right now, I've just caught myself using a brand new one today ...
"I think I'll leave that image in your head, right ... there ..." (usually just after conjuring up some appalling, funny, sexy or other unshakeable visual earworm in your head).
Night night, night stalkers. Sleep light. Stay sharp.
