Oh, so many to choose from.
But if it came down to it, I'd love to write up one for myself, get published and then have that character solve the mystery.
Much more satisfying.
Otherwise, oh, Dr Mark Sloan, perhaps, or Jessica Fletcher. Perhaps Sgt Bullock from the Batman comic; Rorschach from Watchmen; Terry Pratchett's embittered, drying out, recovering alcoholic ex-Sergeant Vimes; Detective Inspector Morse; Detective Robert Goren, NYPD Major Crimes Unit; or Detectives Green and Lennie Briscoe of the NYPD Robbery / Homicide Division.
