We're now receiving Freeview.

After so many long years of analogue TV, finally my folks decided to bite the bullet and pay for a digital signal box. At the same time, in their infinite widsom, they decided to move the TV to the second living room, where the aerial coax cable doesn't go.

No worries, I hear them say. We'll buy a set-top aerial.

Well, we've been having problems.

Firstly, the room we've moved into is a signal dead spot. We need the outside aerial feed anyway, which means Dad has to drill the hole in the wall to feed the coax through far sooner than he'd wanted. This means the internal aerial we bought turned out to be useless.

Next, we've got no Channel Five reception whatsoever. Guess what? It isn't due to the Winter Hill transmitter. No, the problem is our aerial, which isn't wideband.

So we'll need to upgrade the damn thing anyway, even if we went back to analogue. Argh. :(

Its no worse than my house. We live quite close to birmingham air port, so you can hear the pilots talking on their radios when the planes pass over the house. We live in like a signal valley so if some one somewhere turns their tv on, ours will turn off. And vis a vis

Signal Valleys and Unwanted Radio Traffic

I know exactly what you mean. We used to get unwanted radio chatter over all our stations because the chap next door used to be a CB fan with an illegal signal booster on his rig.

Last night, though, as I was working on the Freeview, I told Mum "Well, looks like we might not get a good picture, but at least we'll be able to listen to Arrow Taxis."

So at least I got a laugh out of it. :)

Things have improved since the posting. I kicked the coax cable, and the picture went suddenly clear as crystal. Even Channel Five went clear - and that's never happened here.

I found out that it's a piece of cable splicing that needs fixing. We'll get it fixed tomorrow with a proper cable connector ... and that, it would seem, might solve all of our problems at a stroke.

I hope.
