On Smoking

Talked to this girl the other day, while I was on my way up to Manchester. For some reason, the topic got onto smoking.

So I asked her if she smoked.

"Yes, I smoke," she said, "but only after sex."

I thought about this.

"So, then," I said, "twenty a day habit, then?"

This is the best phonetic translation of what Michael Rennie says to the screen in The Day The Earth Stood Still. Other phrases, namely "Gort! Deglet Ovrosco!" "Gort! Baringa!" and, of course, "Gort! Klaatu Barada Nikto!" have been phonetically transcribed, but to date, I have never seen this speech, where Klaatu "programs" the half hour demonstration:

"Imrei Klaatu naruwat. Makro pluval buratu lukdensul impitlis. Yavu tariatsul badektio baringi degis."
