National winner Hallo Dandy dies

Hallo Dandy, winner of the 1984 Grand National, was put down on veterinary advice on Monday at the age of 33.

The gelding, trained by Gordon Richards and ridden by Neale Doughty, won the Aintree marathon by three lengths from Greasepaint with Corbiere in third. More ...

Thing is, I remember this race. I actually won the college sweep they ran that year.

The irony was, I didn't pick the actual winner. I won by default, because nobody picked Hallo Dandy. Actually, the one who did pick Hallo Dandy thought it too "poofy" a name and threw it back into the hat.

And I, the Plainclothes Clown, picked Greasepaint.

Heh.

Moral: Sometimes, it pays to come in second.
