I stumbled upon a post by Grigor Yeghiazaryan, here, titled "Why I Write."

The post resonates so much with how I feel about writing.

His first words from the blog are

"The simple answer is because I feel I need to. But you are here not for that answer."

He then lists five main points off the top of his head specifically as to why he does write. I'll use his own headlines - but the thoughts beneath come not from Grigor but from me.

1. I get it better if I write it down

In my case, my imagination comes up with all sorts of things. I make connections between phenomena and it all comes out as a kind of visual jazz.

When I write something down, I try to put that visual jazz into words in such a way as to convey that sense of jazz into the minds of the readers.

Sticky Words, aimed at your souls.

2. Writing improves my writing skills

No question there.

I once took a vocabulary test, which estimated my vocabulary knowledge at around 45,000 words. However, I still write to practice how to use those words.

Cliches mark the most tired and tiresome form of writing; the exhausted mind, bereft of creativity and originality, writes down well-worn phrases with no concern for where they came from, how they originated and, most of all, the effect they are meant to convey compared with the effect that they do convey.

3. I want to share my knowledge

In this case - in my case - it's experience that I want to share.

I can't exactly convey wisdom here, because I'm not exactly the wisest of men. If I were, doubtless I'd have a lot more money in the bank and a lot more time on my hands. So I'll just convey the things I'd like to say here, and hope that people who read it take my words as sagacity rather than as folly. An outcome over which I have little control anyway, so I never dwell on things like that.

4. I want people to know me

My intent here is pretty straightforward. I want people out in the world to know that someone here has a voice, and has things to say and ways of saying it. For good and bad, here I am.

5. I want to get followers

No question there. I want the exact same thing. This is why I continue to write: to refine my vocabulary and perfect my writing style, to build on my experiences, and to train my writing voice such that it will attract people who will become followers.

However ... even if I didn't manage to attract so much as a single note of mild interest ...

I write, because I want to. Because I have to.
