The Great Klingon Tragedy Unfolds ...

fiat_knoxFurther to my correspondence earlier, when I wrote that extensive passage in Klingon ...
Basically, this correspondent on the Klingon language mailing list was steamrollering over someone who was talking about his efforts to expand upon the abandoned Atlantean language as developed by Marc Okrand for the Disney Corporation.
Excuse the D word. I vowed I would never use that swearword on my blog if i could help it.
Anyhow, "abandoned" it is, which is a real shame. The Atlantean language was developed a lot more fully and completely by Marc Okrand, the creator of the Klingon language - a language which, sadly, is nowadays more referred to in jest and in passing than actively spoken - but after the release of the film, no support for it was ever made, so we only have the limited exposure to the language and the few words listed in that Atlantis animation they did.
I don't know if the knowledge that MO designed the language will make me more willing and interested in actually breaking the taboo of a lifetime and sitting down to watch a D-word film ... the jury's still out on that one. In any case, I don't think I have ever actually seen that film on DVD anyway, to this is a moot point.
Anyhow, the tragedy began when, on the mailing list, I watched as a neophyte dropped in on the Klingonist list, aks dared to ask them if someone could offer support and advice on this Atlantean language.
When this Klingonist mafia started more than sixteen years ago, I saw first hand how jealous, bitchy and downright monstrous some of these people can be. There was only one comment. True to form, it was sarcastic and vitriolic.
I hate seeing the hope in people's eyes snuffed out by one ill-placed bad word from some total fucking stranger. I hate the internet for letting Disney like this happen.
So I replied, pointed out that noblesse oblige, told him to teach, not preach, and told him to leave the newbie alone unless he was interested in learning this Atlantean language for himself.
And of course this one responded with threats and challenges. In Klingon.
He referred to "my words are like hot air, like a wind."
I responded with "The wind does not respect a fool. You have called me a wind, and now you try and make me respect you. What does that make you?"
After a torrid riposte of ad hominem insults, I said that, in effect, I don't boast about my knowledge of Klingon. Nor do I gloat when I fell another Klingonist.
Enter d'Armand Speers, another veteran Klingonist - who I think wrote the Klingon Bible, and translated some of Shakespeare's works. Yes. Him. Unlike me, D'Armand never walked away from Klingon, mostly because he probably never gave a shit what other people thought - that, and most likely he liked the taste of poison.
It was just then that I realised something. D'Armand was defending the Klingonist I put down.
Like a Mamma bear defending her cub. Or a Sith lord protecting his Apprentice.
Sorry. Wrong movie. *wrist slap*
And so the other shoe just dropped. When I uncovered the email from Mr Speers, it was inexplicably in my Bulk folder, along with the response from Doq (Red, or is that Orange?). The mailing list seems to end up getting dumped in the trash by SpamGuard for no apparent reason, or otherwise I'd have never seen this.
I might respond to Doq and D'Armand, but really it's not worth the bother. Only a fool fights in a burning house, and only an idiot fights for pleasure since pleasure is non-essential.
And I'll now resume my Klingon studies, after a fourteen year absence brought about by pissants ruining the joy for everyone. I can only hope some of the worst have been killed in battle fighting ferocious Tribbles by now, but it is irrelevant.
Time to start from scratch. And not to give up again.
