The BBC has reported the first test of DTN, Disruption - Tolerant Networking, the first interplanetary internet protocol designed for networking over distances whose response times can be measured in days:-

This isn't exactly subspace communications or the Cortex from Firefly, but it means that in the future, no colony, space station, vessel or individual doing EVA should ever be alone in the Black.
