Edit: Does anyone else here remember the Firefly episode "Heart of Gold," about Nandi and the girls down in that whorehouse?

You know, the place that looked like a frozen dinner pack with all the aluminium sheeting over it?

In that episode, Nandi recounted a tale of how she murdered a dulcimer in Companion school. Well, in answer to several questions I just got asked, the above musical instrument is a dulcimer.

That's one of the two completely different kinds of dulcimer :-)

That's a hammered dulcimer ... the other kind is the Appalachian Dulcimer, which is the kind that an American would be more likely to know ... http://www.eaglemusicshop.com/details1.asp?ProductID=4814&name=ozark-appalachian-dulcimer.htm

There's also a bowed dulcimer which is sort of like the Appalachian dulcimer, but played more like a cello.
