You've reminded me that I want to get round to reading HP Lovecraft. I have the books in the house but have never got round to reading them. Do you know what order is best?
Any order in particular will do; his stories follow no chronological order.
Start with some of the smaller, juicier short stories to whet your appetite. The first Lovecraft story I ever read was "The Music of Erich Zann," followed by "Pickman's Model."
The next ones I read, in rough order, were "The Call of Cthulhu," "The Colour Out of Space," "The Haunter of The Dark," "The Whisperer in Darkness," "The Shadow over Innsmouth," "The Shadow Out of Time," and finally "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."
You'll note that they're arranged in increasing order of length. This is deliberate. The shorter stories are ... practice. The longer ones have the reputation of being somewhat marathon reads. :)
