It started with my getting Firefly, and discovering all about the 'verse, especially the Companions, Inara in particular.

I guess it just tuned my mind towards hookers, because virtually every bloody conversation that's been held around me this past week, someone's mentioned prostitution, whoring, bordelloes, brothels, the whole damn sex industry.

The news got into the act last night, with the headline that twice as many men now pay for sex (well, technically, all men pay for sex somehow, but you catch my meaning) and a piece of news about five Eastern European men who got busted for running whores they'd imported from back home.

I couldn't even get away from it this morning in writing class - the subject I had to write about was a bordello in Bucharest.

Thus ended the Week of Hookers.

Unless it's the Month of Hookers, and nobody told me ...

Um...

...that's a pretty shitty thing to say, particularly since it infers that all women are whores.

Infers?

I infer no such thing, T. Not all men look for women for sex; not all men go out specifically looking to buy sexual favours; and while there are some men and women in the world whose sole source of income is based around selling their bodies for money, they don't represent all women (or men).

However, what I was asserting was that there's no such thing as "free" sex, no matter what people might think. Even if you're buying a top shelf mag and going solo, you're still paying for it.

And what I was really asserting was that this week just gone seemed to contain nearly constant refererences to prostitution and the sex trade.

I guess it all depends on how people view sex. I don't consider that everyone pays for sex in some sense of the word. That implies that everyone is trying to use sex to get something else out of life. And some couples (Jeff and myself for example) don't do that. Sex is just sex. A free exchange and neither of us are trying to get anything outside of the experience from each other. Whereas people like Staci the Racist do use sex as a way to get things they want out of their partners. She frequently did things that Barry wanted/expected, knowing that she could in turn go on a shopping spree for things she wanted afterward. THAT situation was pure Marriage Prostitution, IMO, for which she's now paying the consequences for since they're divorcing and she's got to go back to her non-wealthy way of life, get a job and be alone for all her preaching to me about what makes a good wife.

I think that the idea of paying for sex really comes down to who considers sex as a payment for something else or that they have to do something in order to pay for sex (housework, money, shopping trips, diamond rings...no shit on this one...Madam C's mother got a diamond ring of some sort from her husband and her comment to C was, "See what I got for giving a good blow job?"...*shudders*...not an image anyone wants). For me, any sex I ever have should be with someone I trust enough that it's a free exchange of energy and fun, no expectations.
