Today, I did the single most important thing I think I'll do this month.
I voted.
I've gone on so much about human rights and freedoms on this blog, that it would be seriously remiss of me to forget to exercise my personal rights and liberties, and to claim my personal right (not a privilege - a right!) to pledge my own democratic vote.
As always, I voted with my conscience and voted for the person I feel is the likeliest to tackle the issues concerning me in a manner that is of benefit to myself and to the community. I didn't vote for the politicians the newspapers wanted me to vote for.
This is the European election, not a general election, by-election or local council election. The MEP I voted for has a much larger brief than my little island nation: yet, this MEP still had time to reply to me personally when I wrote concerning a European vote a few months back.
The press are seriously distorting the European issue. Honestly, if the public only knew what is really going on across the Channel, and how it affects us.
But the way things are, people here don't know squat about Europe. They're ignorant of matters in the town next door. Many are even ignorant of the people in the houses adjacent to them.
We are a nation of next door neighbours, and everybody's a stranger, dangerous and violent.
If we're going to get out of the shit, we're going to have to stop thinking like this, and start becoming more aware of our neighbours, both locally, nationally and internationally.
And I don't mean by increased electronic surveillance and ID cards, either. I mean by people opening their doors, reaching out and saying "hello" to the folks next door.
Despite the lies the press are telling us, not everyone's neighbour's an Ian Huntley. Though Gods help you if you discovered that your neighbour was Nick Griffin or Hazel Blears.
Or Jacqui Smith, for that matter.
I came here to Jones the Computer to post this blog entry (because LJ is blocked by the stupid library). I might not get much chance to go online tonight, and you likely won't see me online till tomorrow morning. I just had to say this now, while I had the opportunity.
All my British f'list, now hear this. While you can, get out there and vote. Today.
Now.
Whoever you like, vote for that MEP you want representing you in Europe. Just vote. It's your right.
