As I post this, the official trailer for JJ Abrams' Star Trek flick has yet to be released on the official movie site here (as of this posting, only [25 hours] (revision mine) before its official release here).

However, a ... possibly less than legal copy's found its way onto YouTube:-

See for yourself, on either site. Me, I am reserving my opinion.

There's an old saying in 2000AD circles: "You can't write Judge Dredd." Likewise, it takes a lot of talent to write for an established franchise such as Doctor Who, Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and White Wolf's World of Darkness; but, most of all, you need one hell of a lot of talent to be able to revision the Star Trek franchise from what feels like the ground up.

This is a complete root canal reworking of the established franchise. Whether or not it succeeds or fails, only time will actually tell.

But I can say this. I didn't think much about TNG back in 1987, until I saw the first few episodes. Then I loved it. Well, apart from "Sub Rosa" and that one where Data's head got knocked off his shoulders in 1800s San Francisco. And that one with the last outpost, and Riker's really bad acting when he's screaming on top of that cliff. And the end of season 2 clip show. And ...

Apart from those. :)

As for me, I can quite happily wait for the film to come out. May 2009 is a hell of a long way away, when you consider that the length of one life is the next breath. The future beyond the end of this sentence is not written; for some, it may never be written; and so thoughts of what I'll be doing come May 9 next year are the least of my concerns right now.

This, sums up my feelings towards TNG and the later spin-offs perfectly.
