Each previous decade ended better than the last - even the Eighties had something good about it, like a revival of SF from the dark decade of the Seventies with all those downbeat movies like Soylent Green and Phase IV symptomatic of SF being a dying genre.
But this decade ended feeling worse than the UK under Thatcher in 1980 - which means the suckage factor of Tories getting into power, rising racism, celeb culture and the post-9/11 paranoia that began putting CCTVs on every street corner and had a go at dismantling the basic human rights we'd all taken for granted for centuries, all conspired to turn back the Western cultural clock thirty years.
Let's make 2020 the year we bring the light back to Western civilisation, because damn me if 2012's Mayan Sixth Age apocalypse doesn't seem to be in danger of becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy after all otherwise.
